Engraved Silver Bazuband Amulet Case
In excellent condition, from 19th Century Northern India or Persia(Iran), an engraved silver amulet case. “Bazuband” derives from a Persian word meaning “upper armband”. These finely crafted little boxes were attached by cords to the upper arms of soldiers and contained Koranic text as talismanic protection. Eventually Bazubands came to be worn empty, as the protective powers of the texts were believed to have been subsumed by the containers themselves. This slightly domed, hinged octagonal container is embellished with zigzag and crosshatch borders, an anthropomorphic solar motif, and in Farsi Arabic, 8 of the ninety-nine names of God. On the lid, much of the original black enamel detailing remains, and there are opposing flanges for the Bazuband’s arm cords. A desirable piece.
