This clover-shaped silver lacquer amulet was traditionally worn by the women of Morocco’s Atlantic coast, either on the chest or on a belt. The foulat, or “bean”, is the green gem in the centre which acts to disperse evil in the four directions. Khamssa refers both to the number five and to the protective hand symbol seen throughout North Africa. Inscriptions on the amulet face indicate that it originated in Essaouira in the Hijiri year 1326, 120 years ago.
